Appolicious: IVONA takes the robotic voice out of Android’s speaking apps

While having apps that can shout out driving directions or read passages from a book are pretty standard, the robotic voice supplying that information no longer has to sound like the computer from War Games. Through a combination of artificial intelligence and original voice talent, 10-year-old IVONA is a leader in developing conversational text-to-speech technology. The company’s new and free (for now) Android app brings a new voice to services like Google Navigation, Book Search and Handcent SMS.

IVONA, Finding a Better Way

TTS – Faster and Less Expensive. "It is basically a human right to have TTS in your own language and listen to books in your own language." [Lukasz Osowski, CEO, IVONA Software]. Traditionally the creation of TTS for a language is a very complicated process. Both specialists for the language and a great deal of knowledge about that language are needed. IVONA had therefore determined that they would not be able to build more than ten languages as they wouldn't have the time or money to do so. With the existing technology it would take one or two years to build a single language. It would require billions of dollars and hundreds of people to build TTS for a large number of minority languages. They decided there must be another way, so they researched new technology to build new languages more easily and more quickly.

In their final year at Gdańsk University, two young men, Lukasz Osowski and Michal Kaszczuk, both with a passion for computer technology, decided that they wanted to build a useful product for people and at the same time use the knowledge they had gained to build a company. It was as important to them that the results of their efforts be useful for people as it was to create a business. They were as passionate about helping people as they were about computer technology. Their expectations have changed considerably since 2001 when they could only dream of achieving what they have actually done over the past ten years.
